Topeka First Presbyterian Church

Topeka, KS

Stained Glass Restoration and Conservation

Project Summary

About the Church

Built in 1884, First Presbyterian Church of Topeka stands as a cultural and spiritual landmark in the heart of Kansas. While its Victorian-era architecture is impressive, the sanctuary is most renowned for its “Windows of Comfort”—a rare, cohesive installation of ten original stained glass windows designed by Louis Comfort Tiffany and installed in 1911. These windows are made of Tiffany’s patented “favrile” glass, where color is inherent in the material rather than painted on, creating an iridescent quality that shifts with the light. Louis Comfort Tiffany himself traveled to Topeka to ensure the sanctuary’s color scheme and skylights harmonized perfectly with these masterworks.

Our Work

Willet Studios was honored to perform a critical restoration of the iconic “Alpha and Omega” Tiffany windows. These medallion-style windows serve as the spiritual bookends of the church’s world-class collection, and our work was focused on ensuring they remain preserved for future generations.

Stabilization and Restoration

Given the windows’ age and historical significance, our restoration process was highly specialized:

  • Structural Integrity: We worked to stabilize the windows, addressing structural fatigue while preserving the original lead came and glass matrix.
  • Material Preservation: Our team was meticulous in honoring Louis Comfort Tiffany’s craftsmanship, ensuring that any repairs maintained the integrity of the original favrile glass and hand-faceted “jewels.”
  • Artistic Intent: By focusing on the Alpha and Omega bookends, we safeguarded the visual rhythm of the “Windows of Comfort,” maintaining the spiritual presence and narrative flow that Tiffany intended when he first sketched the designs over a century ago.

Long-Term Protection

To ensure these rare masterpieces can withstand environmental stress, we installed a new Klear-Flo® protective covering system. This system provides a clear, durable shield that protects the fragile glass from exterior elements while allowing the ever-changing colors and details of the Tiffany windows to be experienced fully from both inside and outside the sanctuary.
