Project Summary

About the Project

The 1964 New York World’s Fair was a global showcase of innovation, culture, and design, drawing participation from 80 nations, 24 U.S. states, and nearly 350 American companies. Among them, Willet Stained Glass Studios contributed to the artistic and architectural impact of the fair through the creation of stained glass installations for the Hall of Science—an exhibition space dedicated to scientific advancement and public education. This project represented a unique intersection of art and technology, aligning with the fair’s broader theme of “Peace Through Understanding.”

Project Scope & Artistic Vision

Willet Studios was commissioned to design and fabricate stained glass elements that complemented the modernist architecture of the Hall of Science while enhancing the visitor experience through light, color, and narrative expression.

Design Integration: The stained glass installations were conceived to harmonize with the building’s contemporary lines, using abstraction and vibrant color to reflect themes of discovery, innovation, and human progress.

Material Innovation: In keeping with the forward-looking spirit of the fair, the project explored the use of non-traditional glazing techniques and materials that pushed beyond ecclesiastical applications into a public, educational setting.

Collaborative Execution: The work required coordination with architects, engineers, and exhibition designers to ensure seamless integration within the larger pavilion environment.

Fabrication & Installation

Willet artisans executed the project with precision, balancing artistic intent with the technical demands of a high-profile, large-scale international exhibition.

Studio Craftsmanship: Each panel was carefully fabricated using time-honored stained glass techniques, adapted to meet the scale and visibility required for a world’s fair audience.

Structural Considerations: The installations were engineered to withstand the structural and environmental conditions of a temporary yet heavily trafficked exhibition space.

On-Site Coordination: Installation was completed in close collaboration with site teams to align with the fair’s strict construction timelines and operational requirements.

A Legacy of Innovation

Willet Stained Glass Studios’ contribution to the Hall of Science at the 1964 New York World’s Fair stands as a testament to the versatility of stained glass as both an artistic and architectural medium. By stepping beyond traditional religious contexts, the project demonstrated how glass could engage broader audiences, enhancing public spaces through light and design.

This work remains an important chapter in Willet’s history—highlighting a moment when craftsmanship met innovation on a global stage, and reinforcing the enduring relevance of stained glass in modern environments.
