Repair and Restoration (Re-lead)
About the Chapel
Summerall Chapel is a non-denominational chapel located on the campus of The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. Built in 1936, the chapel was dedicated in 1938 and has served as an important place of worship, reflection, and remembrance for generations of cadets, alumni, faculty, and visitors.
The chapel features an extensive collection of stained glass windows, including class windows depicting scenes from the life of Christ, commemorative medallions, and the great chancel window behind the altar. Together, the windows create a unified artistic character throughout the chapel.
Our Work
Willet Studios completed the restoration and re-leading of four multi-lancet and traceried stained glass windows at Summerall Chapel. The project included carefully removing the windows, completing a comprehensive restoration program, re-leading the panels, and installing new protective coverings to help safeguard the historic stained glass.
Historic Restoration & Re-Leading
The existing lead came was carefully removed and the stained glass was restored before the panels were re-leaded. Re-leading replaces deteriorated lead came that holds individual pieces of glass together, helping restore the structural integrity of the stained glass while preserving the original artwork.
The restoration process included:
- Removing the existing protective covering from each window.
- Carefully removing the stained glass windows from their openings.
- Installing temporary transparencies in the existing openings while the stained glass was being restored.
- Completing the historic restoration and re-leading of the stained glass windows.
- Re-installing the restored stained glass windows in their original openings.
- Installing protective coverings in the traceries to provide additional protection for the more intricate portions of the windows.
- Installing the Klear-Flo™ protective covering system with 1/4-inch laminated glass to help protect the restored stained glass.
Protective Coverings
Following restoration, the windows were fitted with new protective coverings. The Klear-Flo™ protective covering system, utilizing 1/4-inch laminated glass, provides an additional layer of protection between the historic stained glass and the elements.
The protective coverings help safeguard the restored windows from environmental exposure and potential impact while allowing the original stained glass to remain the focal point.
Through careful re-leading, historic restoration, and the installation of new protective coverings, Willet Studios helped preserve these four significant windows at Summerall Chapel for future generations.
