Overview of St. Michael’s Church Stained Glass Restoration

About the Church

St. Michael’s Catholic Church is a cornerstone of faith in Duluth, Minnesota, serving as a vibrant community partner alongside the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Rosary. Nestled in a region known for its stunning natural beauty and historical significance, the church is home to exquisite stained glass that serves as both a spiritual and architectural treasure. Given its location near the shores of Lake Superior, the building must withstand some of the most demanding weather conditions in the country, making the preservation of its exterior elements a high priority.

Our Work

Our team was commissioned to perform a critical structural and protective overhaul of the church’s stained glass windows. The project was specifically engineered to fortify the sanctuary against the unique challenges posed by the harsh northern Minnesota climate.

Structural Reinforcement and Frame Replacement Years of exposure to extreme temperature fluctuations and moisture had led to the deterioration of the original window frames. Our restoration process included:

  • Meticulous Removal: Each window was carefully removed from its opening to allow for a comprehensive assessment and minor restoration of the leaded glass panels.
  • Structural Reinforcement: While the windows were off-site, we performed essential structural reinforcements to ensure the glass remained stable and secure.
  • Custom Frame Installation: We manufactured and installed new, properly fitted frames designed to provide superior structural integrity and a precise seal against the elements.

Environmental Protection To ensure the long-term durability of the glass, we installed a specialized protective covering system. This layer acts as a primary shield against:

  • High Winds: Specifically designed to buffer the intense gusts common to the Lake Superior basin.
  • Moisture and Ice: Preventing water infiltration and the damaging effects of the freeze-thaw cycle.
  • Temperature Extremes: Creating a thermal barrier that helps stabilize the environment for the historic glass.

This preservation effort by Willet Studios ensures that the artistry and spiritual legacy of St. Michael’s remains protected and beautiful for generations of parishioners to come.
