St. James Catholic Church

Potosi, MO

Repair and Protective Coverings

Project Summary

Potosi, MO

St. James Catholic Church in Potosi, Missouri, is a site of profound historical weight, standing as one of the oldest parishes in the Archdiocese of St. Louis. With roots stretching back to French Jesuit exploration in the 1720s, the parish was formally established in 1829 in an area then known as “Mine au Breton.” The current brick structure—the parish’s third church—was completed in 1861, just as the Civil War began. During the conflict, the church served as a vital sanctuary for the local community, famously providing refuge for women and children during a major artillery attack in 1864.

Project Scope & Conservation

This project focused on ensuring the long-term survival of the church’s historic windows through a combination of structural conservation and advanced exterior protection. The work addressed seven primary window openings, with five requiring intensive artistic and structural repairs.

Structural & Artistic Repairs

To address over a century of environmental wear and the natural movement of leaded glass, five windows underwent a specialized repair program:

  • Structural Stabilization: Artisans reduced prominent bulges in the glass panels, restoring them to their original flat plane. To prevent future sagging, new structural support braces were custom-fitted and installed.
  • Glass Preservation: Several windows had sustained cracked glass, which was stabilized to prevent further loss.
  • Exterior Re-cementing: The windows were re-cemented on the exterior to revitalize the waterproof seal between the glass and the lead cames, ensuring the panels remain firm and weather-tight.
  • Millwork Restoration: The existing protective coverings were removed, allowing for the cleaning and professional re-painting of the historic millwork, which both refreshes the church’s aesthetic and protects the wood framing.

Advanced Protection: The Klear-Flo® System

A key component of this preservation effort was the installation of the Klear-Flo® protective covering system on all seven windows. This proprietary system utilizes 1/4″ acrylic to provide a high-impact shield against the elements and vandalism while maintaining the architectural integrity of the building. The Klear-Flo® design is engineered to allow for proper airflow, preventing the moisture buildup and heat stagnation that can often damage historic lead and wood frames over time.

A Legacy Preserved

By combining traditional glass repair with state-of-the-art protective technology, this project secures the “precious legacy” of St. James’ sanctuary. The restoration ensures that these historic windows continue to inspire the Potosi community, standing as resiliently today as the church did during the trials of the 19th century.
