St. Donatus, IA
St. Donatus Catholic Church in St. Donatus, Iowa, is a remarkable architectural and cultural landmark, serving as a “Luxembourg village” in the heart of America. Settled by immigrants from Luxembourg in the 1840s, the community is renowned for its preservation of European heritage and traditional stone architecture. The current Gothic Revival church, completed in 1908, was built using the surviving limestone walls of the original 1858 structure after it was tragically damaged by a lightning fire. As a centerpiece of the National Register-listed Village of St. Donatus Historic District, the church remains a vital testament to the faith and endurance of its pioneer founders.
Project Scope & Conservation Repairs
The preservation project addressed seventeen windows throughout the historic sanctuary, focusing on structural stability and the restoration of the building’s exterior envelope. The work ensured that the historic glass is both protected and functional for the coming decades.
The Restoration Process
Artisans performed a range of specialized repairs to address a century of environmental exposure:
- Glass & Lead Stabilization: Any cracked glass within the panels was meticulously stabilized. The windows were re-cemented on the exterior surface to restore the waterproof seal and firm up the lead matrices.
- Millwork Restoration: The exterior millwork was professionally repaired and re-painted, revitalizing the windows’ wooden frames and protecting them from moisture and decay.
- Architectural Glazing Bars: To provide additional support without compromising the historic silhouette, custom glazing bars were installed. These bars were carefully placed to follow the major lines of the framing, effectively preserving the building’s authentic Gothic Revival appearance.
Advanced Protection: The Klear-Flo™ System
A central component of this project was the installation of the Klear-Flo™ protective covering system. Utilizing 1/4-inch acrylic and a specialized perimeter frame, this system provides a high-impact shield while allowing the historic architecture to be seen clearly.
- Operational Ventilation: A key challenge was maintaining the church’s original airflow. On ten of the windows, the vents were integrated into the protective covering system in a way that allows them to remain fully operational, providing essential ventilation while still benefiting from exterior protection.
Preserving Luxembourgian Heritage
By combining traditional restoration techniques with the innovative Klear-Flo™ system, this project secures the future of St. Donatus’ historic windows. The work honors the church’s unique role as a bastion of Luxembourgian culture in Iowa, ensuring that its sanctuary remains a beautiful and resilient space for worship and historic tourism alike.
