12 Apostles Stained Glass Project at St. Ann Catholic Church

Willet Studios recently completed a significant liturgical art project for St. Ann Catholic Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. This project involved the creation and installation of a traditional stained glass series that honors classical craftsmanship while enhancing the church’s modern worship space.

Project Scope & Vision

The primary objective was to replace 12 existing windows with a new series depicting the 12 Apostles [00:10]. Under the direction of Father Timothy Reid, the pastor of St. Ann’s, the vision was to create windows that were indistinguishable from the church’s antique Emil Fry windows [01:01]. The goal was to maintain a cohesive aesthetic that reflects the “Munich” style—a hallmark of late 19th and early 20th-century European stained glass.

Artistic Craftsmanship & Techniques

To achieve the depth and richness of antique glass, artisans employed meticulous historic techniques and premium materials:

  • Material Selection: The series utilizes Lamberts mouth-blown German glass, known for its superior clarity and texture.
  • Traditional Painting: Figures were hand-painted using layered shading, silver stain, and enamels to recreate the intricate details found in historic European windows.
  • Historic Reference: The design process involved detailed cartooning and the study of historic references to ensure the figures and decorative elements remained true to the classical “Munich” tradition.

The Collaborative Process

A hallmark of this project was the close collaboration between the studio and the parish [01:50]. Father Reid visited the studio multiple times during the creation process to ensure the artistic direction aligned with the church’s theological and aesthetic goals [02:26].

  • Design Refinement: A key collaborative moment occurred when Father Reid requested a red border for the windows [02:10]. While a departure from the initial palette, this detail significantly enhanced the finished product’s visual impact.
  • Artisan Dedication: The project was fueled by a shared passion for the craft, with the studio team immersing themselves in the challenge of meeting the high standards set for this sacred space [02:49].

Conclusion & Impact

The installation of the Apostle series has been met with high praise from the St. Ann’s community [03:16]. The windows now serve as a “beacon of faith,” fulfilling the church’s mission to use stunning artwork and beautiful liturgies to support its parishioners’ spiritual growth. By blending discipline, tradition, and artistry, the new windows stand as an enduring tribute to the church’s fidelity to Catholic tradition.
