St. Agnes Catholic Church: Coastal Architecture & Stained Glass

About the Church

St. Agnes Catholic Church, located in the beautiful island community of Key Biscayne, Florida, serves as a spiritual home for a diverse and active parish. The church is known for its architecture that embraces the natural beauty and light of its coastal setting. As a parish dedicated to “knowing, loving, and serving God,” St. Agnes provides a sanctuary where the environment and the liturgy work together to foster a deep sense of peace and reflection.

Our Work

The stained glass series at St. Agnes was designed to be a seamless extension of the church’s architecture and its unique South Florida location. Our team created a series of windows that blend historical inspiration with a softened, modern aesthetic.

Artistic Inspiration and Narrative The design of these windows moves away from literal storytelling, opting instead for a more contemplative and symbolic approach:

  • Ancient Roots: Drawing inspiration from early Roman frescoes and mosaics, the windows tell the story of Saint Agnes through gesture and repetition. This restrained composition honors the heritage of the early Church while remaining fresh and relevant.
  • Coastal Palette: To harmonize with the church’s surroundings, we utilized a palette of sepia earth tones. These colors are specifically chosen to merge with the brilliant South Florida luminosity, creating a warm and inviting atmosphere within the sanctuary.

Material and Light Management

  • Opalescent Glass: We incorporated selective opalescent glass into the figures, particularly Saint Agnes herself. This technique allows her image to remain visually present and luminous even as the daylight fades, maintaining a focal point for prayer throughout the evening.
  • Luminous Harmony: The interplay between the transparent antique glass and the opalescent elements ensures the windows are responsive to the changing Florida sun, casting a soft, rhythmic light across the interior space.

This installation represents a thoughtful balance between honoring a patron saint and respecting the specific environmental and architectural context of the Key Biscayne community.
