Stained Glass Restoration and Conservation

Project Overview: First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia

About the Church

Founded in 1796, the First Unitarian Church of Philadelphia is a historic landmark with a legacy of social activism and intellectual leadership. Its current building, completed in 1885, was designed by the visionary architect Frank Furness—the son of the church’s long-time abolitionist minister. A masterwork of Victorian Gothic architecture, the sanctuary is renowned for its bold colors, expressive stonework, and a world-class collection of stained glass featuring works by Tiffany, Henry Holiday, and John La Farge.

Our Work

Willet Studios was entrusted with the monumental task of restoring one of the sanctuary’s most prized artistic treasures: the Isaiah Rose Window, created by the pioneering artist John La Farge around 1900.

Historic Recovery and Stabilization The window had spent nearly three decades in storage before being reunited and stabilized for its return to the sanctuary.

  • Structural Rebuilding: Due to the window’s age and the inherent complexity of La Farge’s “plating” technique—where multiple layers of glass are stacked to achieve deep, painterly tones—the panels suffered from significant metal fatigue. Our team performed an extensive structural rebuild to ensure the window could once again hang safely.
  • Conservation of Painted Details: A primary focus of the restoration was the delicate conservation of original painted elements, most notably the expressive face of the prophet Isaiah. These details were stabilized to preserve La Farge’s nuanced artistry while restoring the window to its intended brilliance.

Award-Winning Craftsmanship This three-month project successfully preserved the structural integrity and historic significance of the landmark work. In recognition of this effort to safeguard Philadelphia’s artistic heritage, the restoration was honored with a 2022 Preservation Achievement Award.
