About the Church
First Parish United Church of Christ has been a part of the Brunswick, Maine, community for generations. Its stained glass windows are an important part of the church’s architectural character and worship space.
Willet Studios has had the opportunity to work with First Parish United Church of Christ for more than six years, providing ongoing on-site repairs and restoration services. The 2025 project continued that long-term preservation effort with the restoration and protection of six stained glass windows.
Our Work
The 2025 project involved six stained glass windows and included historic restoration, millwork restoration, structural improvements, and the installation of new Klear-Flo™ protective coverings.
Historic Restoration
The existing protective coverings were carefully removed before the stained glass windows were taken from their openings and transported for restoration.
While the windows were being restored, temporary painted plywood was installed in the vacated openings to protect the church.
Each stained glass window then underwent a complete program of historic restoration before being carefully returned to the church and reinstalled in its original opening.
Millwork Restoration
The surrounding millwork was also restored as part of the project. Loose paint was removed from the exterior surfaces, preparing the millwork for a new protective finish.
The millwork received both a primer coat and finish coat of Sherwin-Williams Duration, providing a durable finish while refreshing the appearance of the window openings.
Architectural Support & Klear-Flo™ Protective Coverings
Glazing bars were bent to follow the major lines of the existing framing, providing additional support while preserving the exterior appearance and architectural character of the church.
Following restoration, the windows received new protection using Willet Studios’ exclusive Klear-Flo™ protective covering system.
The system utilized a specialized perimeter frame and 1/4-inch acrylic, creating an additional protective barrier between the restored stained glass and the elements.
The Klear-Flo™ system helps protect stained glass from potential impact and environmental exposure while allowing the original artwork to remain visible.
A Long-Term Preservation Partnership
The 2025 project represents the latest chapter in Willet Studios’ more than six years of work with First Parish United Church of Christ.
In addition to this recent restoration project, Willet Studios has provided ongoing on-site repairs and restoration services for the church’s stained glass over the years. This continued partnership allows the condition of the windows to be monitored and addressed over time, helping preserve them for generations to come.
