About the Church
Ferndale First United Methodist Church is a prominent historic landmark located along the iconic Woodward Avenue corridor in Ferndale, Michigan. Known for its welcoming “Only for Everyone” mission, the church has served as a center for worship, community outreach, and historical significance for decades. Its grand architecture and expansive sanctuary make it a cornerstone of the local community, often recognized for its beauty and its long-standing commitment to service. Preserving the structural and aesthetic integrity of its historic windows is vital to maintaining the church’s role as a neighborhood anchor.
Our Work
Our team completed a specialized restoration project focused on six of the church’s windows. The objective was to address age-related deterioration and structural fatigue, ensuring these architectural features remain secure and beautiful for years to come.
Structural Restoration and Stabilization The windows underwent a series of technical repairs to restore their original form and strength:
- Bulge Reduction and Re-cementing: We carefully reduced bulges in the leaded glass to restore a flat, stable profile. Each window was then re-cemented to strengthen the panels and provide a renewed weatherproof seal.
- Steel Reinforcement: To combat structural sagging and ensure long-term stability, custom steel structural support braces were installed where necessary.
- Frame Preservation: On three of the window frames, we applied a specialized rust-inhibiting paint to protect the metal from oxidation and environmental wear.
Protective Glazing and Preservation To safeguard the craftsmanship, we implemented advanced protective measures:
- Tracery Protection: For three of the windows, protective coverings were meticulously installed into the intricate traceries, shielding the most delicate architectural details.
- Klear-flo Protective Covering: All six windows were outfitted with our exclusive Klear-flo protective covering system. Utilizing 1/4-inch high-grade acrylic, this system provides a durable, nearly invisible barrier that protects the stained glass from external impact and weather while allowing the windows’ artistry to shine through.
This project reflects a dedicated effort to blend modern preservation techniques with the church’s historic character, ensuring Ferndale First remains a vibrant place of sanctuary.
