Restoration & Protective Coverings for CBI’s Stained Glass

Charlottesville, VA

Congregation Beth Israel (CBI) in Charlottesville, Virginia, stands as a landmark of faith and resilience. Founded in 1882, it grew from the Hebrew Benevolent Society established in 1870. The synagogue building itself is a rare example of Gothic Revival architecture and holds the distinction of being the oldest synagogue building in Virginia in continuous use. Notably, the structure was originally built at a different location and was dismantled and moved brick-by-brick to its current site on East Jefferson Street in 1904 to make way for a federal building.

Project Scope & Historic Restoration

This project focused on a specialized program of historic restoration and protective covering for a key window within this historic sanctuary. Given the building’s age and significance, the restoration required a meticulous approach to preserve the structural integrity and artistic value of the glass while ensuring it remains protected for future generations.

The Restoration Process

The project followed a detailed preservation protocol to ensure the sanctuary remained aesthetically complete even during the restoration phase:

  • Window Removal: The window was carefully removed from its original setting and transported to the studio for a comprehensive restoration program.
  • Visual Continuity: To maintain the appearance of the sanctuary while the glass was off-site, a custom transparency was installed over the exterior protective covering. This allowed the congregation to enjoy the visual presence of the window’s design throughout the duration of the work.
  • Conservation & Re-installation: After undergoing a full program of cleaning, structural stabilization, and lead restoration, the window was re-installed into its historic frame, now fortified with high-quality protective glazing.

Preserving a Legacy

By combining traditional restoration techniques with modern protective solutions, this project ensures that the historic stained glass of Congregation Beth Israel continues to inspire the Charlottesville community. This work honors the synagogue’s long history—from its 19th-century origins to its survival through a 1948 fire and its ongoing role as a vibrant center for Jewish life in Virginia.
